Heating and cooling in a hard climate

The Triangle asks more of a heating and cooling system than most of the country does. Summers are hot and humid enough that a failed compressor is a same-day problem, and winters are cold enough that a dead furnace on a January night is not something to sleep through. Systems here run most of the year, and they wear accordingly.

Cedarline runs three HVAC crews, more than any other trade we carry. That is deliberate: cooling calls arrive in clusters when a heatwave hits, and a company with one crew simply cannot answer them.

What we work on

We service and install split systems, packaged units, heat pumps, gas and electric furnaces, ductless mini-splits, ductwork, thermostats, and indoor air quality equipment. We work on every major residential brand, and we will service a system we did not install.

We do not work on window or portable air conditioners, and we do not take commercial rooftop package units. Both sit outside what our crews and our licence cover.

Repair, maintenance, or replacement

These three are genuinely different jobs and it is worth knowing which one you need before you call.

A repair is a response to something being wrong: no cooling, no heat, a strange noise, water where it should not be. It starts with a diagnostic visit, and most repairs finish in that same visit.

Maintenance is a scheduled tune-up on a system that is working. It is a different appointment with a different price, and booking a tune-up when your AC has actually failed only delays the repair. If your system is not working, book the repair.

Replacement is a quoted project rather than a service call. It carries no diagnostic fee, it is financing eligible, and it needs an on-site visit to size the system properly. Anyone who quotes you a replacement without measuring the house is guessing.

When it is an emergency

No cooling in high summer and no heat in a hard freeze are both emergency-eligible, and we dispatch around the clock for them. So is a burning smell or visible smoke from an air handler.

Ductwork and indoor air quality work are not emergency-eligible even though they are HVAC. They are real problems, but they are not the kind that cannot wait for the next dispatch window, and pricing them as emergencies would be dishonest.

If you smell gas, leave the building first and call the gas utility. Then call us. Do not operate switches on your way out.

What it costs

Repair visits start with a diagnostic fee that is waived when you approve the repair. Installations and replacements are quoted. Every service page in this section publishes its own typical range, the factors that move it, and whether financing applies.

One cost worth flagging before you get a surprise: systems still running R-22 refrigerant are expensive to recharge, because R-22 has not been produced since 2020 and the remaining supply is reclaimed. On an older system, a refrigerant leak is often the point where replacement becomes the cheaper answer over a few years. We will tell you when that is the case rather than sell you a recharge every summer.
