Working in Apex

Apex has grown faster than almost anywhere in Wake County, and the growth has run outward onto ground that is harder to build on than the older core. That shows up in the work in ways that are worth knowing before you plan a project here.

Ground conditions

Western Apex, toward New Hill and the Chatham line, sits on the heavier Piedmont clay and, in places, shallow rock. Two consequences follow. Anything requiring excavation, a patio base, fence post holes, a footing for an addition, a trench for a generator gas line, can take significantly longer than the same job in sandier ground, and where rock is hit the method changes and so does the price. We survey for it rather than pricing on optimism, and where we cannot know until we dig, the quote says so and states what the alternative method costs.

The same clay drives the drainage work. Water does not soak away here; it runs. Yards that sat dry for a decade start ponding once a neighbouring lot is built and regraded, and downspouts discharging next to a foundation cause problems in Apex that they would not cause elsewhere.

Town services and what is on your lot

The older core has full town water and sewer. Parts of the western and southern edge do not, and a number of houses run on a private well, a septic field, or both. This changes real things. A septic field constrains where a deck, patio, addition or driveway can go, and building over a drain field is not a matter of permission but of ruining the field. A well means your water pressure and quality are your own responsibility, and it means a power cut takes your water with it, which is the most common reason people here ask about a standby generator.

The housing stock

Historic downtown Apex around Salem Street is genuinely old, small, and worth treating carefully. Everything else is 1990s onward: Scotts Mill, Haddon Hall and Salem Village in the middle of the replacement cycle now, Bella Casa, Riley's Pond and the newer developments still young enough that the work is additions rather than repairs. Decks, screened porches, patios and EV chargers are the bulk of what we do in the newer half of town.

Getting to you

All of Apex is inside the 90 minute emergency target with no travel fee. The western zip codes are our longest drive within the city, and in a widespread storm they are where our response stretches first, because everything past the town centre is single-carriageway road.
